Have I got a cold.....or hay-fever?
Sometimes its hard to tell what is a cold and what is an allergy to pollen, dust etc. - sometimes known as a 'summer cold' or 'hay-fever'.
In simple terms, a cold is caused by a virus and you can catch it from others and pass it on, whilst an allergy is an immune response and in severe cases can lead to anaphylaxis, and can be life threatening. Allergies are not transmitted from person to person.
If you have a cold the symptoms will come on fast, are accompanied by body aches, tiredness and sometimes fever; and they decrease relatively quickly.
Symptoms of an allergy may go on for much longer periods and it may vary day-to-day in severity. You may experience itchiness (especially your skin, eyes, face), sore/runny nose and eyes, wheezing, stomach upsets and skin rashes. Also common is puffiness, extreme dryness of your mouth and nose or wheezing/narrowing of airways (different to a blocked nose of a cold). There is also the problem of drowsiness associated with the medication you take for the symptoms as well as the lack of sleep that often accompanies it.
Craniosacral therapy is beneficial for the many conditions and works primarily by balancing the nervous system, this has a significant part to play in recovering and maintaining equilibrium when it comes to allergies.
Your nervous system constantly evaluates your internal and external environment, ensuring your bodies systems are functioning and performing on the inside, and that your external environment is safe. However, it needs downtime and if you're already leading a busy lifestyle and your system is also being constantly stimulated (not to mention disturbed sleep) due to allergies/allergic responses - you are going to have even less energy than under regular circumstances.
